On 24th May 2022, on the 121st anniversary of the 1901 Universal Colliery Disaster, the Aber Valley Heritage Group will be holding a graveside service in honour of William Harris, and to remember those who lost their lives on that tragic day.
William Harris was the sole survivor of the Universal Colliery Disaster in 1901. William’s descendants and Aber Valley Heritage Group have fundraised to enable a kneeler to be added to his grave at Penyrheol Cemetery. This will be unveiled at the service on 24th May where Rev Denzil John, and school choir from Cwm Ifor Primary School will join members of William Harris’ family and volunteers from the heritage group.
The Service will take place at 10:15am on Tuesday 24th May 2022 at Penyrheol Cemetery.
Floral tributes to remember those lives lost in 1901 distaster may still be laid at the Welsh National and Universal Mining Memorial Garden.
